Peptides  >  Bombesins
Tetradecapeptide bombesin was originally obtained from the skins of toads, Bombina bombina and B. variegata. Several bombesin-related peptides have been isolated from amphibians and are classified into three subfamilies: the Bombesin family, the Ranatensin family and the Phyllolitorin family. These groupings are based on sequence identities in the eight carboxy terminal amino acids which are responsible for receptor binding and biological activities. Bombesin is an endogenous neurotransmitter in many animals, including mammals. Bombesin affects gastric secretion and renal circulation and function. It regulates secretion of neuropeptides and hormones. It also has direct mitogenic effects besides stimulating release of gastric hormones. Bombesin has also been shown to promote fetal lung development.
