Processed from a 160-amino acid proglucagon precursor, Glucagon is produced in the A-cells of the Islets of Langerhans, in the L cells of the intestinal mucosa and in specialized neurons of the central nervous system (mainly in the hypothalamus and in the medulla oblongata). It functions as a counter-regulatory hormone that opposes the actions of insulin and maintains the levels of blood glucose, particularly in patients with hypoglycemia. Glucagon regulates glucose homeostasis through enhanced synthesis and mobilization of glucose in the liver. Besides possessing insulinotropic properties and direct action on satiety center in the brain, GLP-1 may be the main hormone regulating the amount of ingested food and water.
