Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein (MOG), a 26- to 28-kDa protein, is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is expressed exclusively in the central nervous system (CNS), specifically on the surface of myelinating oligodendrocytes and external lamellae of myelin sheath. Although MOG protein constitutes only 0.01-0.05% of the CNS myelin proteins, it was demonstrated that MOG protein is a crucial autoantigen for multiple sclerosis in humans and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in rodents and monkeys.

Myelin Basic Protein (MBP) is the major constituent of the CNS myelin synthesized by oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells. MBP, PLP (proteolipid proteins) and MOG (myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein) are potential primary encephalitogenic target antigens in multiple sclerosis.
